Winter IDE Announced!

Each Break in the School year a select group of students are selected to participate in Innovation Gym, Immersion Design Experiences.  10 Days of work to put your engineering prowess to the test.  We tackle an engineering challenge that encompasses the entire engineering design process. Each IDE has a different flavor but they all have the potential to change the way you look at the world.

Are you interested in 3D printing and digital fabrication? If yes, than this IDE is for you. There is a revolution going on and this is your chance to be a part of it.  Over the course of 10 days (January 6th-16th 2014) we will be designing and building our own 3D printer or other digital manufacturing tool (3D scanner, CNC, etc).  We will do research into what currently exists in the 3D printing industry and identify new opportunities and applications of the technology. We will then be designing and building our own “Innovation Gym” brand printer, what that means is up to you!

The IDE is limited to a maximum of 10 students and is open to all years and majors.  You do not have to have prior experience in designing or building to participate, just an open and willing mindset. Applications are open until December 16th at 12pm and you can apply here http://smugym.com/?page_id=115

Please email Greg if you have any questions. gneedel@lyle.smu.edu

World’s Tallest Toy

The Innovation Gym has partnered with WabaFun to build the Word’s Tallest Toy. Students from SMU will have until Monday at 4PM to work in teams in order to build the tallest tower from Wabafun’s award winning “SuperStructs”  There will be 5 teams of 4 students each working to prototype and build the tallest structure during the 72 hour build window. The winning team will take their design, scale it up to 120 ft in order to set a Guinness World Record.

Innovation Gym Update 9-30-13

I hope you all had a good weekend and have fully recovered from all of the tests that took place last week. We are deep into the semester and things are really rolling in the innovation Gym.  Today is the last day to sign up for the FALL IDE so be sure to jump on this opportunity.

Before I get to the upcoming events I want to recognize the team from the Innovation GYM that competed last weekend in the 20/20 hackathon and were able to win and take home the top prize of $10,000. Great job guys! It just goes to show you what you can accomplish in a weekend if you put your mind to it.

Here are some of the upcoming events in the Gym that you should be interested in.

  • Fall Immersion Design Experience – October 11-14th (Signup by September 30th)
    • This IDE we have partnered with a company called “Wabafun” to have a competition on who can design and build the tallest tower using their toy product “SUPERSTRUCTS,” a plastic version of Tinkertoys.  Up to 5 teams of 4 will attempt to build the tallest structure they can with the toys in the time provided.  The team that wins will get a trip to Washington, DC in fall of 2014 to oversee the build of another tower which will be going for a Guinness World Record to become the “World’s Tallest Toy”.
    • If you are interested in being part of this event please apply through this form. http://smugym.com/?page_id=115 Applications are individual, but there is a spot for other people you would like to work with. By filling out the application you commit to being available for the event if selected. This event is limited to 20 students.

  • 3D printer and Laser cutter training
    • Many of you have received the training for this equipment but there are still many of you who have been asking about it, specifically the want to have training at other times. I have listened and have moved the training times and am offering a new opportunity to get trained on the equipment.
    • Starting tomorrow 10-1-2013, training will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am-12pm. hopefully this time allows more of you to attend.
    • Group sessions – In order to accommodate groups and teams I will schedule specific training sessions for the equipment.  The process is simple. Gather a group of friends must be 6 or more students, pick 3 times you all can commit to training and send me an email with the information. I will try to make one of the 3 times work and will conduct a training session.
      • You must block off times of 1 hour and the time must be scheduled more than 1 week in advance.
      • Each of these group sessions will be scheduled and put on the Innovation Gym calendar. This will allow others to take advantage of the time and will be open for anyone to attend.

  • Innovation Competition – We are only a couple weeks away from the launch of the 2013/2014 Innovation Competition, and a chance for you to win your piece of ~$10,000 to help fund your venture. Look for more information on this contest in the upcoming update.

  • Innovator Hours – Do you have an idea but don’t know where to go next? Come to innovator hours every Friday at noon.  We all share ideas and see what we can do on a Friday afternoon.

  • Robotics Club – The robotics club meets in the Innovation Gym every Tuesday night at 7pm. Come and build robots, no experience required.

  • TEDxSMU – Every Tuesday at 12:30pm, we meet in the gym watch a TED talk and have a discussion about the topic. Bring your lunch and get involved in the conversation

Please encourage your friends to sign up for this list by sending them here http://smugym.com/?page_id=73   As always an updated calendar you can always go to www.smugym.com, Like us on facebook, or stop by the Gym.

Gym Update 9/13/13

Happy Friday the 13th. I hope that the first 3 weeks of your school year have been great so far. The Innovation Gym is rolling along and we have quite a few things coming up that I am sure you will all be interested in.

  • Commercial Hunter Job Opportunity
    • For the past 3 years SMU has been one of only a few schools to partner with the US Marines, to participate in the commercial hunter program, which is designed to think creatively about possible threats to the marines, through trying to see what is possible with commercially available goods and information. You can read about the program here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commercial_Hunter
    • We are wrapping up our last program right now and are looking for motivated students who would be interested in being part of our next teams. For this next challenge we are looking to build two teams of 5 students each. The program runs all year with different goals for each semester. The specifics of the project are not given out until you are actually selected for the team.
    • You do not need to have any previous experience with the topic or the military. This program is limited to Undergraduate SMU students who are US Citizens and you must be able to start as soon as next week. The pay is $15 per hour and requires 5-10 hours per week of work with flexible timing.
    • If you are interested please apply through this link and I will be conducting interviews the early part of next week for a goal of a project kickoff of Thursday the 19th. http://smugym.com/?page_id=119
  •  Fall Immersion Design Experience – October 11-14th

  • Machine training – If you are receiving this email it means that you have already completed the access form to the innovation gym and you should have card swipe access. This access grants your access to the gym, but not the cool equipment like the 3D printer, Laser cutter, and power tools. Each one of those tools requires special training before you are allowed to use them. The training calendar has now been posted to www.smugym.com. We will be holding regular training sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-3pm. As well as Friday afternoons. More training sessions will be added.
    • Machine Safety – All of the training is due to safety for you and everyone else who uses the Innovation Gym. Once you are trained you are encouraged to help others with their projects until they can also be trained. You are also expected to report unsafe or unauthorized activity.
  • Innovator Hours – Each Friday from 12:00-2pm and beyond, people are encouraged to come hang out in the gym. This is a chance to share ideas, try things, learn new skills and explore what is possible. I will also be holding training sessions for the equipment during this time based on attendance and interest.
